Federal Emergency Management Agency - Independent Study Courses

The United States Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Emergency Management Institute (EMI), offers self-paced courses designed for people who have academic/business continuity and emergency management responsibilities. All are offered free-of-charge and it’s encouraged that UIC faculty and staff complete introductory courses depending on their specific responsibilities.

FEMA’s Independent Study Program offers courses that support the nine mission areas identified by the National Preparedness Goal and supports UIC’s Continuity Planning and Emergency Management initiatives to ensure a safe, resilient campus community.

Continuity of Operations Curriculum

Courses in the Continuity of Operations Curriculum tie in with the National Response Framework and will help UIC faculty, staff, and medical personnel plan for and maintain operations in order to continue providing our constituents with critical academic, business, public health, and medical care functions and resources following a disaster. The courses listed will provide a brief overview of continuity planning and the Continuity Management Cycle. Although these courses directly addresses continuity requirements for Federal Executive branch organizations, the course is also useful to State, local, territorial, and tribal governments. Each course will assist UIC faculty, staff, and medical personnel to better understand the essential elements of a viable continuity program.
